Privacy policy

1. Data controller

This policy applies to web.julianverse.de, my personal website with projects, artwork, collections, search and a guestbook. Other Julianverse services are covered by the central privacy policy (German) and their own service-specific notices.

2. Hosting and technical access data

This website is hosted on GitHub Pages. The provider is GitHub; its privacy statement lists GitHub B.V., Prins Bernhardplein 200, 1097 JB Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and GitHub, Inc., 88 Colin P. Kelly Jr. Street, San Francisco, CA 94107, USA.

Requests involve technical connection data such as your IP address, the requested URL, the time of access and browser information. GitHub stores visitors' IP addresses for security purposes, including when they are not signed in. This processing serves to deliver the website and protect it against abuse. The legal basis is Article 6(1)(f) GDPR; my legitimate interest is operating a secure, reliable website.

GitHub determines the retention of its operational and security data according to the purposes and legal requirements described in its policy. No fixed retention period for these Pages logs is stated here.

3. Local settings, images and analytics

I do not embed advertising or analytics tools. Fonts come from your device; images, icons and content files are served with the website. There are no automatically loaded social-media feeds or connections to Audible or Steam to retrieve the collections.

When you toggle Calm mode, the setting is saved in your browser's local storage under julian-indie.calm and read on subsequent visits. The setting itself is not sent to me. It remains until you change it or delete the website's stored data.

This storage access supports the display option you explicitly choose (Section 25(2), no. 2 of the German TDDDG). To the extent that personal data is processed, the basis is Article 6(1)(f) GDPR and the legitimate interest in remembering your selected setting. The website itself does not set cookies for this purpose. Additional information about the optional guestbook follows below.

4. Search and clipboard

The site search loads public content files and pages from the same host and searches them in your browser. Search terms are not sent to a search engine. Submitting a search does, however, put the term in the address bar as ?q=. If you reload, bookmark and reopen, or share that address, the term becomes part of the request sent to GitHub Pages. It may also appear in your browser history. Please do not enter confidential information into the search.

The button for copying the 88×31 HTML code only writes to your clipboard after you click it. The website does not read your clipboard's existing contents.

5. Guestbook using giscus and GitHub

The guestbook is disabled by default. Choosing “Load guestbook” gives consent to load the external embed for that page visit. This connects to giscus.app and GitHub. Technical data such as your IP address and browser information is needed for these connections. Images embedded in comments may contact additional providers.

The embed is loaded on the basis of your consent (Article 6(1)(a) GDPR). You can withdraw it by choosing “Unload guestbook”: the page reloads without activating the guestbook again. A new click is also required on later visits. Withdrawal takes effect for the future and does not affect the lawfulness of earlier processing.

To post, you sign in through GitHub and authorise giscus. According to giscus, this stores an encrypted sign-in token in your browser's local storage. giscus states that it does not use its own tracking cookies. Storage necessary for the sign-in you request is covered by Section 25(2), no. 2 TDDDG. Signing out or clearing the relevant browser data removes the local sign-in; simply unloading the guestbook does not.

Comments and reactions are stored in this repository's public GitHub Discussions. Your contribution and public GitHub profile, including your username and avatar, are visible to others. Posting is voluntary; please do not include confidential information. Posts remain public until deleted. You can edit or delete your own comments on GitHub, or contact me about deletion. Platform logs and backups are also subject to GitHub's policies.

6. Contact and linked websites

If you email me, I process your sender address, message and the information needed to respond. Email service providers involved in delivery and storage also receive this data. The legal basis is Article 6(1)(f) GDPR and my legitimate interest in answering enquiries; Article 6(1)(b) GDPR applies to enquiries related to a contract.

I retain messages for as long as needed to handle the enquiry and, where applicable, resolve legal claims or meet statutory retention requirements. They are then deleted.

Project, image-source and social-media links are ordinary links. Following one takes you away from this website; the destination processes data under its own privacy notice. Contacting me through a platform is also subject to that platform's rules.

7. Processing outside the EU or EEA

GitHub and services used by the guestbook may process data outside the EU or EEA, particularly in the United States. GitHub describes safeguards including the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses. Details of the applicable safeguards and contact options are provided in the international transfers section of GitHub's privacy statement.

8. Your rights

Subject to the applicable legal conditions, you can request access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing and data portability (Articles 15–20 GDPR). You can withdraw consent at any time with effect for the future.

Right to object: You can object to processing based on Article 6(1)(f) GDPR on grounds relating to your particular situation (Article 21 GDPR).

To exercise these rights, contact account@julianverse.de. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority, particularly in your place of habitual residence, work or the alleged infringement (Article 77 GDPR).

This website does not carry out automated decision-making, including profiling, that produces legal or similarly significant effects. Using the guestbook and contacting me are voluntary; the website cannot be delivered without the necessary technical connection data.
